A doula is a trained professional who provides continuous, physical, emotional and informational support to birthing families before, during and just after childbirth. "A doula is part of the birthing team to give that continuous support through the entire process as an additional coach, someone who can explain what's happening. Having a doula at the birth makes a huge difference in birth outcomes and a greater satisfaction with the overall birth experience," said Louise Albrecht-Mallinger, CD-BDT, doula program coordinator for 22 years at Franciscan Health Crown Point. "A doula doesn't replace your partner or doctor." A certified doula, childbirth educator, and an approved trainer through DONA International, Albrecht-Mallinger runs the doula volunteer program at Franciscan Health Crown Point and leads doula training three times each year as a DONA International approved doula. The next training will be in June. "It is a four-day, in-person, highly interactive, hands-on training," Albrecht-Mallinger said. “We cover lots of things in the training about the roles and responsibilities, the benefits of doulas along with code of ethics and standards of practice. "During training, we sharpen our communication skills by using and understanding things that block communication, using reflective listening skills, the causes or effects of pain, how we can use comfort measures, physical and emotional and provide informational support to our families during the birthing experience. We perform a lot of rehearsal labor support skills, simulated labor and role-playing. It's a lot of fun." "The ripple effect from receiving AEDs is going to make our community safer and help save lives," said Kathy Martin of Healthy Communities of Clinton County. With the help of external funding, Franciscan Health Lafayette was able to provide AEDs and CPR training last week to more than 20 area non-profits through the Revive and Survive program. "Of the people with cardiac arrest who receive a shock from an AED in the first minute, 9 out of 10 live," said Serena Johnston, Franciscan Health Education program manager and American Heart Association Training Center coordinator. "A very quick response time is necessary when cardiac arrest occurs and so ensuring that AEDs are immediately accessible in our local communities where people live, work, pray and play is crucial." https://lnkd.in/gfs2iT8x
