  • A welcoming face and listening ear can make all the difference. Thomas Bowling, Client Relationship Representative at our Franklin Banking Center, recently helped a customer who brought in his younger sister for some financial advice. The young woman was interested in opening a CD and had initially gone to a different bank – but she told Thomas she didn’t feel like the banker there had listened to her. “What works for one client doesn’t always work for another, and sometimes people have an idea of what they want, but there’s another solution that meets that want and also meets their financial needs,” Thomas said. “So, I asked her what her goals were – what she really wanted this money to accomplish for her, because depending on that answer a CD may not have been the best choice for her.” The young woman shared that she had a small business account, and that her goal was to earn interest on the money she had. Keeping in mind the changing nature of businesses, Thomas recommended a Money Market account, which would meet her goal of a higher interest rate but would keep the funds available in case she needed them for her business. “She was happy with that recommendation and told me she’d never had a banker recommend things that helped her, as opposed to just selling her something,” Thomas said. “That really touched me, because this is why we do what we do – my goal is to always build a life-long relationship over pushing a product.” Thank you, Thomas, for helping your clients prosper!

  • U.S. equity markets continued to rebound higher last week and recoup from April’s pullback that was sparked by sticky inflation readings that indicated greater risk of interest rates being held higher for longer. Last week’s market gains were bolstered by data showing a modest slowdown in hiring and growth from red-hot levels, which increased expectations that the Fed could begin to lower rates this year with the economy still on firm footing (albeit cooling), despite the recent inflation readings. For the week, the Dow Jones led the way rising 2.2%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite notched gains of 1.8% and 1.2%, respectively. • Investors reacted positively to the Federal Reserve showing a slightly more dovish stance on monetary policy and an uptick in the unemployment rate, resulting in back-to-back weekly gains for most markets. The softer April jobs report, including the slight increase in unemployment, was well received by markets because it plays into hopes for a “Goldilocks” economic outlook in which the labor market and growth remain resilient but without overheating and stoking inflation. For the week, the S&P 500 was up 0.56%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 1.14%, and the NASDAQ gained 1.44%. The S&P Mid-cap Index and Small cap Index were up 1.19% and 1.39%, respectively, and the Russell 2000 small-cap index was up 1.68%. The MSCI AC World ex USA was up 1.49% for the week.
