Community Hospital South Opens New Operating Suites

The opening of six next-generation operating rooms marks the completion of the first phase of construction of The Next Evolution of Community Hospital South. All inpatient surgical care at the hospital will be transitioned to the new operating rooms by October 19.

“We’re bringing surgery to the next level on the south side of Indianapolis,” said Anthony Lennen, president of Community Hospital South. “It’s a monumental first step toward the completion of our Next Evolution project, combining the latest technologies with the finest surgical care in the area.”

Designed with significant input from physicians and nurses, the new operating rooms promote efficient, safe and high-quality surgical care. Each room features an identical layout so that clinicians can navigate the rooms with ease and quickly access the supplies they need. They are equipped with high-definition video technology for detailed viewing of radiographic images. Green light technology—the same technology that is used in Air Force jet cockpits—is available for use during laparoscopic procedures, to reduce eye strain on surgeons while allowing others in the surgical suite to see and complete tasks. Additionally, the spaciousness of each room not only accommodates equipment for multiple surgical disciplines, it also aids caregivers in safely and efficiently moving around the room before, during and after a procedure.

The new operating rooms also boast some environmentally-friendly features, including low-energy lighting and automatic thermostats to regulate temperatures. Items in the old operating rooms that will not be used in the new construction will be recycled once they are removed from the facility.

Other updates to the surgical wing at Community South, including private pre-operative and recovery rooms, a patient and family waiting area, a pre-operative clinic and endoscopy suites, will be completed in mid-year 2010.  These components are designed to create a coordinated experience for patients and families, with all surgical care centered in one location.

“We had our patients, physicians and nurses in mind throughout the planning of our new surgical areas,” said Mark Walke, executive director of Community South surgical services. “We understand that what’s most important is the care that can be delivered within our new walls, and we’ve created an environment to support that exceptional surgical experience.”

In addition to the new surgical areas, The Next Evolution of Community Hospital South will include a five-story, all-private room patient tower and expanded outpatient services with convenient access. The $130 million project is on schedule, with the grand opening of the patient tower slated for mid-year 2010.
